PEACHES DOES HERSELF: 5 Questions for Peaches

We decided to ask Peaches five questions about her new movie, Peaches Does Herself, which is playing at the Toronto International Film Festival. Here's what she had to say.

1. Why make Peaches Does Herself into a movie?

For all the lazy people who didn't make their way to Berlin to see one of the ten performances we did of the stage production.

2. What movies were your inspirations when transforming the stage show into a movie?

I saw Phantom of the Paradise and Tommy at a very young age and it's affected everything I do ever since.

I am also inspired by Sandra Bernhard's Without You I'm Nothing.

Phantom Of The Paradise, 1974
3. Who do you want to go see the movie besides your already-existing fan base?

Vladimir Putin, Todd Akin, and Rick Santorum.

4. What is the one thing you hope people take away after seeing Peaches Does Herself?

It's a feel good movie, really. I want people to feel empowered, get creative!

5. When are you going to take over the world?

I'm working on it!

Tommy, 1975

PEACHES DOES HERSELF: 5 Videos By Peaches

For those of you who have not yet experienced Peaches, you're in for a treat! Here's a quick primer on some of her music, in video form, to prepare you for the spectacle of Peaches Does Herself.
"Relax": Science Fiction plus Peaches equals AWESOMENESS.

"I Feel Cream": This video is sparkly, glittery, and multicolored, just like the song. It also showcases what a gorgeous voice she has. Plus, Peaches raps are always amazing.

"Serpentine": Peaches gives us her version of the "found footage" trend, tearing off the layers (literally) to reveal serious attitude. She has the best hairstyles and outfits ever. WARNING: THERE ARE SWEARS IN THIS SONG.

"Sex (I'm a…)": Who else could do a better cover of Berlin's iconic song than Peaches? And she sings both the male and female parts. The video is fantastic, too.

5 Behind The Camera: Directors Of Photography

We'd like to focus on some of the talented people whose work you can enjoy in five of the films playing at the Toronto International Film Festival. Each is a Director of Photography, also known as a DP: Ernesto Herrera (Here Comes The Devil), Gary Shaw (iLL Manors), Linda Wassberg (Blondie), Laurie Rose (Sightseers), and Robin Thomson (Peaches Does Herself).

Ernesto Herrera, the DP for Here Comes The Devil, also worked with director Adrián García Bogliano on 2011's Penumbra. Variety made specific mention of his skills in their review, stating that he "intensifies audience unease in several scenes by portentously framing characters in mirrors, doorways and hallways, subtly suggesting that power is shifting and screws are tightening."

"What stood out most to me [in Penumbra] was the slick cinematography" which "added an almost surreal atmosphere to the film that was quite effective," said Cinema Head Cheese blog. We look forward to Herrera's work in Here Comes The Devil, which plays at the Festival.
We have already seen DP Gary Shaw's excellent work in Duncan Jones's 2009 Moon.
"The lighting is subtle yet brilliant and the cinematography definitely succeeds in highlighting Sam's isolation," remarked Cinemaroll in their review, while Zarzax The Blog classified the cinematography as "amazing."

Shaw's work on iLL Manors, playing at the Festival, is also getting recognition. Eat Sleep Live Film proclaims, "The film's visual style belies its low-budget origins. Director of photography Gary Shaw (who also shot Duncan Jones film Moon) ensures it looks good, even when things get very bad."

Before Blondie, Linda Wassberg lensed She Monkeys in 2011. For that, she won the prize for Best Cinematography at the Transylvania International Film Festival in Romania. Sound on Sight praised Wassberg's work highly, saying, she "amps up the atmosphere: shadows, natural darkness, and narrow scope are used to emphasize the claustrophobia of the girl's lives."

Variety also took note of Wassberg's prowess in their review of She Monkeys: "The stellar tech package is led by Linda Wassberg's atmospheric, tightly focused widescreen lensing." Wassberg's work impressed Chorus and Echo, who said She Monkeys was, "beautifully shot and convincingly styled-one can only hope for more from cinematographer Linda Wassberg." We feel sure that  "more" will be more than obvious in Blondie, which will be playing at the Festival.

Ben Wheatley has previously collaborated with DP Laurie Rose on the films Kill List and Down Terrace. The two team up again on Sightseers, which is playing at the Festival. "From the very outset the cinematography is striking," notes Sound on Sight in their review of Sightseers, "direct credit to DP Laurie Rose whose use of darkness in particular is masterful."

Telegraph also had great things to say about Sightseers, remarking "Laurie Rose gives the Yorkshire and Cumbrian landscapes a dewily gorgeous sheen." The Hollywood Reporter admired how Rose's "widescreen digital cinematography presents the countryside in a sufficiently splendid and alluring manner to delight UK tourist authorities—even if Wheatley's vision of this 'green and pleasant land' tends to be strewn with messily-dispatched corpses. We don't doubt that such a contrast will be stunning in Sightseers.

Robin Thomson, who shot and edited Peaches Does Herself, graduated with a BA of Fine Arts from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, Dundee, Scotland in 2008. According to his website he is also working in Berlin as a video editor, artist, and musician, as well as managing Peaches' various online platforms, including her blog and social media.

Recently, Thomson compiled and edited a guerilla video that Peaches organized with her fans to support the Russian punk activist band Pussy Riot, who were charged and convicted of "hooliganism" (for real) for their song "Putin Lights Up The Fires." Watch the video here.

While you're waiting for a screening of Peaches Does Herself at the Festival,  you can also watch more of Thomson's work on his website.

PEACHES DOES HERSELF: Who Is Peaches?

With all of her talents and accomplishments—singer, songwriter, musician, DJ, performer, provocateur—maybe a better question would be, who ISN'T Peaches? At one point, she even had her own action figure, but her career didn't fully explode until she was in her early thirties.

Peaches, born Merrill Nisker in Toronto, graduated from Toronto's York University. For nearly a decade afterwards, she educated kids—first at a local YMCA, and later at private schools and homes—through a self-designed program she developed to "cultivate children's creativity outside of the established structure of music and drama classes."

All the while, she was honing her skills, germinating the seeds of what would eventually explode into the Peaches persona.

She began her musical career with folk songs, but soon developed her own unique sound and style: rapping over a Roland MC505 sequencer. Frustrated with her prospects in Toronto, and with hardly any radio support, she moved to Berlin. After one gig performing the tracks from an EP she'd recorded, the Kitty-Yo label signed her immediately. That EP (Lovertits) and an album (The Teaches Of Peaches) soon followed.

Her subsequent four albums (Fatherfucker, Impeach My Bush, I Feel Cream) ran the gamut from rapping over heavy synths and samples to a full rock band sound and then onwards to pure dance music complemented by Peaches' astonishing vocal range (a skill she held back on revealing until she felt people had already accepted her musical skills). Her 2010 one-woman production of Peaches Christ Superstar, a reimagining of the '70s rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar, was another success.

The Guardian once proclaimed, "as a pop star, Peaches is so niche she needs a category of her own."
Peaches' music and live performances push boundaries, combining theater, burlesque, and cabaret, while addressing beauty, feminism, mainstream and alternative culture, gender identity, sexual politics, and well, regular politics.

A January 2012 interview with Typewriter Trasher posed this question to Peaches: "What does it take to have longevity at a time when everyone is so obsessed with what’s new?" Her response?

"I think you just have to go along and keep doing whatever it is that you’re doing, and realize that there are times when it’s going to click with people and there are times when, even if you think it’s your best work, it’s just not going to. And that can’t discourage you."

Viva la Peaches, the epitome of not just DIY but also Do What You Want. Her latest creation, Peaches Does Herself, is screening at the Toronto International Film Festival.

PEACHES DOES HERSELF: Director profile: Peaches

Would you believe that Peaches Does Herself is not the first film from the Toronto-born singer/songwriter/musician/performance artist/force of nature known as Peaches?

True to her gender-busting and genre-bending nature, Peaches wrote, directed, and starred in a Super-8 "bike porn" film called Chromosome XXX. Although much of her career has been theatrical, in both the visual and aural sense, it wasn't until 2010 that she took her act from the rock stage to the rock opera stage with a one-woman reimagining of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's Jesus Christ Superstar, christened (what else?) Peaches Christ Superstar.

Yes, you read that right. Peaches played all the characters and sang all the songs, accompanied only on piano played by her frequent collaborator, Chilly Gonzales.

If that wasn't enough of a career-defining accomplishment, to celebrate the tenth anniversary of her album The Teaches Of Peaches, she then embarked on a new theatrical production, Peaches Does Herself, transitioning from playing all the roles herself to gathering a full cast and crew for an epic stage presentation spanning her entire career and incorporating twenty of her songs.

"Peaches Does Herself," swooned Expatriarch, "is a balls-out extravagasmic stage production: Half send-up of Mamma Mia!-style pop musicals and half rock concert."

Now this rollicking, raunchy extravaganza has been transformed further into a concert movie of the same name that will be playing at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The title might be a pun on Debbie Does Dallas as well as self-love, but it's also a statement of purpose: No one can do Peaches better than Peaches herself. Peaches Does Herself is a must-see movie!

PEACHES DOES HERSELF Behind the Scenes Videos

Toronto-born electronic musician Peaches brings her 'anti-jukebox musical' based around her four albums Teaches of Peaches, Fatherfucker, Impeach My Bush and I Feel Cream to the big screen in her first feature film Peaches Does Herself. Originally performed at the Hebbel-Theater in Berlin, Germany in October 2010, this short behind the scenes clip highlights the lead-up to the opening night performance of Peaches' transsexual rock opera. According to Peaches herself, the opera "tells the story of a young woman who, inspired by a 65-year-old stripper, begins to make sexually forthright music."
