THE WORLD OF KANAKO: TIFF Twitter Buzz!

"Twitter?! I don't have time for Twitter. I have extreme acts of violence to enact!"

Well, don't say we didn't warn ya, but The World of Kanako is definitely one of those polarizing films. If you're into graphic, graphic violence and strong imagery like the people quoted from Twitter below, then we highly recommend catching the last screening of this one. It's on a Saturday so at least you'll have Sunday to recover. Phew

SHREW'S NEST: TIFF Twitter Buzz!

Don't look so sad, Montse. There's still one more chance for everyone to see Shrew's Nest

It's been a busy opening weekend for the Festival and with so many movies premiering, it's hard to make decisions. This twisted, macabre tale has been keeping audiences on the edge of their seat. Check out some of the Twitter buzz that's been, uh, buzzing (sure?) around. And after that since we know you'll be dying to catch it, we've listed the final screening information below. That's right, you have one more chance to see this darkly beautiful film! THE VOICES: Sundance Buzz!

"What, I'm excited. This is my excited face."

The Voices is a lot to take in on first glance. Ryan Reynolds? Talking animals? Wait, is that a head on that table? And what is up with those couch cushions?! So, it's totally understandable that you might be hesitant to add it to your Festival list. That's okay. There, there. We forgive you. This blog is going to help you get over your hesitation and running (literally to the box office or figuratively to the TIFF website) for a ticket before they go off-sale. You might wanna have your credit card ready before you start reading...

We still stand firmly on the belief that the less you know about this movie, the better so we've carefully selected reviews that don't give away too much.

Joey Paur at Geeky Tyrant admits that "The Voices isn't for everyone, as it's extremely bloody and very disturbing, but in the best possible way, especially if you kind of have a demented mind."

Demented minds? Say no more, as we know all you readers have a little bit of dement...ness (Eh? Well, it's a word now.) lurking around in those delicious brains of yours. Paur also says:
I knew this movie was going to be a dark comedy going in, but I didn't know just how dark it would be. It goes into some very black places, but at the same time you can't help laughing because it's seriously funny as hell. There's definitely a lot of uncomfortable laughter. Reynolds plays such a great character in this movie. He has to show a lot of range and be funny, dramatic, and psycho, and he pulls it off seamlessly. This could very well be one of Reynolds' best performances to date.

Adam Chitwood at Collider declares that "The Voices is an insane movie about insanity" and "that [it] wears its crazy right on its sleeve."

We might even go as far to add that it's an insanely-insane movie about insanity. If such a thing didn't exist before, it does now. He goes on to compliment the style of the film:
The visual cues in the film are remarkably executed. When on his pills, Jerry sees the world as colorful and bright, almost as a picturesque 1950s society. He wears bright colored jackets, smiles a lot, and eats the same delicious cereal every day. This is the style in which the movie opens, but when Satrapi gives us a glimpse of the reality of what Jerry is seeing, these visual themes are all the more impressive. Moreover, Satrapi plays with a number of horror tropes throughout the film, bringing an air of familiarity to some of the more tense scenes but always playing them with a slight twist that makes them feel fresh and odd.
And we're wildly in love with the three things Eric D. Snider at Film.com wrote that you need to know about The Voices:
One: Marjane Satrapi, the Iranian filmmaker whose autobiographical “Persepolis” made waves a few years ago, is a major directorial talent. Two: there is a demented screenwriter named Michael R. Perry who should probably be on some kind of watch list. Three: if Ryan Reynolds will keep making risky, offbeat aberrations like this, we’ll overlook the “Green Lantern”s and “R.I.P.D.”s and love him forever.
Enough with the reviews! Bring on the tweets! Below that you'll find the screening information. We recommend taking a date to this movie. You'll know if they run out screaming it wasn't meant to be.

THE CELESTIAL WIVES OF MEADOW MARI: Twitter Round Up!

Seems like people have enjoyed Alexei Fedorchenko's Celestial Wives of Meadow Mari. Don't believe us? Check out Twitter.

If that whole "Russian folklore" thing makes you question the appeal of this movie, you should check out this review from Trista Devries at Toronto Film Scene:

Whether this is subject matter you would normally find interesting or not, this is a stunningly beautiful film designed to help audiences participate in a gorgeous, dying culture.

See? Everyone wins.(And go read Siân's article on Russian folklore!)

THE STRANGE COLOUR OF YOUR BODY'S TEARS: Twitter and Review Round Up!

The Strange Colour of Your Body's Tears is not a movie that can be easily explained. There have been both awestruck and overwhelmed reactions to the film--not surprising considering its over-the-top visuals and Last Year At Marienbad-style "narrative."

Here's a sampling of what folks have been saying on Twitter as well as choice quotes from some of our favorite reviews of the film.

"You have absolutely never seen anything like The Strange Colour of Your Body's Tears."
--Anton Sirius, Ain't It Cool

"It's tempting to reference Strange Colour as a sort of neo-giallo, a term applied frequently to its predecessor. But it's not, really. It's something else, a strange new language that uses those familiar elements as their base while going off in some other direction."
--Todd Brown, Twitchfilm

"Lengthy passages are unrelated to any discernible narrative, and seem to exist in that interzone your mind travels through just before it goes to sleep. You may be familiar – it’s often the time when your leg twitches, heart skips a beat and you slam open your eyes again."
--Jordan Hoffman, Film.com

"The Strange Colour of Your Body’s Tears, a visual masterpiece that will confuse, confound, and hypnotize you as it’s one of the most visually extravagant explorations of the gaudy and grotesque ever committed to film . . . if you give into its lusty charms, you won’t be disappointed in its endless delights, surpassing the intensity of many titles it owes its existence to."
Nicholas Bell, Ion Cinema

"Cattet and Forzani treat the camera like a murder weapon, slashing it across rooms, penetrating characters' eyeballs in extreme close-ups, emphasizing the garish color schemes, and obscuring conversations with multiple split screens. They're not telling a story so much as transmitting hallucinations."
--Matt Barone, Complex Mag

"I don't think I can win here. I looooooooove The Strange Colour of Your Body's Tears. Love. I'm in love, you guys. I'm not fucking around. I think it's one of the best horror movies I've ever seen."
--Travis Lee Bean, Film Colossus

For those of you planning to attend Austin's Fantastic Fest, there is great news! The Strange Colour of Your Body's Tears will be screening there this year.

GERONTOPHILIA Twitter Round Up!

Gerontophilia is the latest film from Bruce LaBruce (now playing at the Festival's Vanguard Programme) and it is not to be missed. You don't have to take my word for it (although you should); here is what the Twitterverse has been saying.

THE SACRAMENT Twitter Round-Up Part 1!

Okay, okay, so today is the day you have to figure out how to clone yourself. Or, at the very least, be in two places at once. Why? Because tonight Zack Parker's Proxy premieres and Ti West's The Sacrament has its second screening around the same time.

Whoa, whoa. Hold up: does this mean that Joe Swanberg (who appears in both films) will officially be in two places at once?! Curse him and his awesomeness; first he has a burger named after him and now this. We guess it only makes sense--he is the Unofficial Vanguard Mascot after all. [We're gonna print up shirts ~ The Editor].

Anyway, we can't tell you which film to pick. Proxy may just be frightening enough to kill you, but so far the Twitterverse reviews from The Sacrament are pretty effin' amazing. Luckily there are more screenings of both later in the week. YOU MUST BE SO RELIEVED, EH?

To those of you attending the Proxy premiere, we eagerly anticipate your Twitterverse reactions. And for those planning on attending The Sacrament, here's a little Twittery sampling to get you even more excited:

SEX, DRUGS & TAXATION Twitter Round-Up!

If you were smart, your weekend would have included the hilarious Danish biopic Sex, Drugs & Taxation. It played twice over the weekend to amazing reviews. Completely off the wall and completely (sort of) true, this is one Festival film not to be missed--you know, because of scenes lke the one with the gorilla and the penis, among many, many others. You've got one more chance to prove yourself (phew) and your smartness (that's a word, right?) with a final screening later this week.

Check out some of the Twitterverse conversation and information about the last screening time below.

PEOPLE IN PLACES Director Profile and Twitter Round-Up!

This past weekend was graced with two--yes two!--screenings of Juan Cavestany's People In Places (Gente en Sitos). To those of you who missed those two chances to see this delightful film (ahem, you better have a good excuse), we put together a little background on the director and some thoughts on the film from the Twitterverse to help entice you to catch the last screening.

Impressively, Cavestany wrote, directed, and shot People In Places. We can barely do two things at the same time, so colour us impressed. (Which is probably a lovely shade of aqua.) His other writing credits include Guerreros (which he co-wrote with director Daniel Calparsoro). The film centred on a group of Spanish army engineers during the Kosovo War. The tense war drama was screened at the 2002 Toronto International Film Festival. And then for something completely different, he wrote the screenplay for 2007's Blinkers, which focused on a soccer referee and some shady occurrences.

But he's not done yet: Cavestany also has three previous writer/director credits under his belt. 2004's El asombroso munro de Borjamari y Pocholo is a movie about two kids from the 80s who refuse to grow up and features a rocking' soundtrack of 80s Spanish pop hits. Four years later,  Cavestany was tackling the comedy genre with Gente de Mala Calidad, a film about veteran gigolo who comes home and attempts to win back his old sweetheart. And then Dispongo de barcos (2010) is described as a surreal drama/comedy as the four main characters wander a city in a daze trying to figure out who they are--to themselves and each other.

Whether it's a war drama or coming of age movie set to 80s songs, Cavestany has proven his talent with a unique voice and penchant for the bizarre and odd. His film at this year's Festival is no different. See what the word (pun totally intended) is on Twitter. (Note, some of these are in Spanish, but our trusty translator tells us they speak nothing but high praise.)

And now that we know you're totally dying to catch the last screening of People In Places, here is all the information you need:

PEOPLE IN PLACES Final Screening Time:

  • Friday, Sept 13th, 9:00 PM SCOTIABANK 4

WE GOTTA GET OUT OF THIS PLACE Twitter Round-Up!

Here's what we know for sure:

1.) We Gotta Get Out of This Place premiered this past weekend at the Festival and had a second screening.

2.) It was f**king awesome. Wait, can we swear on this blog? We mean "freaking". Yes, that's it.

3.) If you weren't there, you really, really missed out. And we can guarantee it will be one of those regrets you agonize over to your future grand-children. "Kids, way back in twenty-aught-thirteen, when there was only an iPhone 5 (cue grandchildren gasping in horror) I had a chance to see an amazing movie and I missed out. My life has never been the same."

4.) No, really. We're being serious. Ch-ch-check out these Twitterverse reviews:

5.) You still have one more chance to catch this gritty, pulpy, thriller. We'll give you a moment to appropriately freak out, then see below for the final screening time. Advice: if you have other plans already: what other plans?

WE GOTTA GET OUT OF THIS PLACE Final Screening Time:

HORNS Twitter Round-Up and Final Screening Info!

If you were smart enough to attend the Festival's premiere screening of Horns at the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema last night, you would know a few things. You would know what a Tragi-Comi-Horridy is, that Daniel Radcliffe is as charming as ever, that Joe Hill is quite brilliant at the whole Q&A thing, and that Juno Temple has great taste in shoes. Oh, yeah: you would also know that Horns is pretty freakin' amazing.

Upon leaving after the Q&A, audience members could barely contain their enjoyment of the film. And if you're sitting there feeling rather sorry for yourself that you missed out on your chance to see Horns, never fear! There is one more screening left tomorrow. Yes, tomorrow! Clear your afternoon schedule and tell your mum that you'll be busy tomorrow at 1:00PM. Better yet, take your mum with you.

As if you're still on the fence about catching the final screening of Horns, but just in case you're having a lapse in judgment here's some more convincing from the Twitterverse:

HORNS FINAL Screening Time:

  • Sunday, Sept 8th, 1:00 PM SCOTIABANK 4

PEACHES DOES HERSELF: Twitter Round-Up

Though the Festival is nearing its end (sniff sniff), there are still two more chances to catch Peaches Does Herself, or would that be "chances to catch Peaches doing herself"? Looks like Twitter is overwhelmed, overstimulated, and over the moon about the movie:

If you're looking for a good way to send Festival 2012 out with a bang, go bear witness to Peaches Does Herself.

PEACHES DOES HERSELF Screening Times:
Sat., Sept. 15th, TIFF BELL LIGHTBOX 4 3:15PM
Sun., Sept. 16th, JACKMAN HALL (AGO) 4:00PM

Thursday, September 13, 2012

SIGHTSEERS: Twitter Round Up

If you knew what was good for you, you were at the Sightseers premiere the other night. And if you really, really knew what was good for you, you were at the second screening today. Because what is good for you is the watching the movie Sightseers. Well, that and eating a healthy, balanced diet. Also brushing your teeth. Yeah, that's good for you too. But, but! Way more important than something like "eating healthy" (pssh) is making sure you saw Sightseers. The packed house at the Ryerson premiere knew they were in for a treat when director Ben Wheatley introduced the film by saying there was a lot of f*cking in it. And dogs and vistas. You know--all the things that make a good film.

To those of you who apparently don't know what is good for you, you're in luck too because there is one more screenings of Sightseers during the festival. This is the best news since we found out that Yorkshire has the good kind of pasta sauce. See you at the last screening, Vanguarders.

SIGHTSEERS Screening Times:
Sun., Sept. 16th, 7:00 PM BLOOR HOT DOCS CINEMA

HERE COMES THE DEVIL: Twitter Round-Up

Here comes Here Comes The Devil, the new film from Argentinian director Adrián García Bogliano. This one is set in Tijuana, but it's not about a bunch of high school kids on Spring Break. Unless Spring Break includes murder, possessed children, and creepy peeping toms. (If it does, you should probably seek help.)

What sayeth Twitter? Here's a sampling?

Hurry hurry! Get tickets for the last two screenings! One of them is tonight! We will not be held responsible if Old Scratch takes his revenge on you for not seeing this movie!

HERE COMES THE DEVIL Screening Times:
Wed., Sept. 13th, 7:00PM, SCOTIABANK THEATRE 3
Sun., Sept. 16th, 3:30PM, SCOTIABANK THEATRE 4
