Farewell for Now, Beloved Vanguard Blog Readers...

Welp, we thought if we just pretended like TIFF never ended we could keep living the Vanguard dream forever. Except it did. Two weeks ago. Wait, or is it three? You’re telling us it’s OCTOBER tomorrow?

Well, dang.

In any case, this was one of our best Vanguard years ever but we have a tendency to say that every year so it would be best to just start mentally preparing yourself for 2015 right now. We know we are.

All of our beautiful Vanguard babies have gone off in the world to other festivals and/or acquiring distribution and we could be more proud. Spring will be delighting even more audiences thanks to Drafthouse and Raven Banner. Shrew's Nest, Waste Land and Over Your Dead Body also played The Fantastic Fest. The Voices won two well deserved awards at l'Etrange Festival. Hyena will be distributed in North America by Tribeca Films. IFC Films scooped up Duke of Burgundy. Third World will be releasing The World of Kanako in 2015. Radius/The Weinstein Company will be bringing the terrifying children of Goodnight, Mommy to North America. Music Box picked up Alleluia for distribution and Media Luna will be distributing Luna (no relation).

So if you didn’t see these amazing films at TIFF (ugh, what a jabroni) you have a chance to redeem yourself during their theatrical releases. Just don’t mess it up this time, alright?

Until next year, beloved Vanguard Blog readers. Now, if you'll excuse us, we have something in our eyes.

Fashions of Vanguard '14

We really need to get Evan from Spring some new clothes.

We really need to get you some  new clothes.

Evan from Spring has just the one outfit and he wants to look nice for his new cthonically ancient special lady. We have some advice for him--and for you, if you want to look good red carping and at the Preëms, as the fanciest of festival-goers say. Fortunately, we have a variety of looks from the Vanguard programme films this year... and even a few from the Midnight Madness movies!

Ryan Reynolds suggests this inspirational shirt.

(Ryan Reynolds? Ryan Reynolds, man.)

There's always the elusive beauty of the semi-imaginary moth boy.

Pro tip: Wooden fingers are so hot this year!

Mesh tank tops and leather pants are back! (Not that they ever really went away…)

The fashionable lepidopterist always wears stocking and heels and sometimes hats, gloves, and capes, when the weather calls for it.

The gloves and capes make for a classic look. Of course, sometimes you might want something more classically mad science. Consider a long gown and bandages.

Or perhaps just a mask. Masks are very on trend this year.

The mud and touches of moss really bring the look together.

Or if you want your face to show, you can do a bold eye liner and a bold lip with a bearskin.

You can even try mixing a message t-shirt with an animal mask, bringing 3 looks together.

But with a full stag head, you might want to balance it with the vulnerability of nudity.

Speaking of balancing revealing skin with tantalizingly covering it up, Cal keeps his excellent penis sheathed in what appears to be a paisley thong.

But before you go full Seventies, just ask yourself, Does this mustache really express me?

It’s important for vampires to always look their best, even when vacuuming the flat.

And always be prepared for fashion mishaps. Uh oh, looks like Viago got blood on his dandy suit. Some soda water and paper towels should get those stains out.

Or you could simply change into this embroidered distressed denim jacket while your clothes are in the wash.

There are a few Fashion Don'ts however...

Creepy ex-boyfriends who give you sexually transmitted hauntings are a definite fashion no no.

When wearing blood, it’s important to blend and remember to never overdo it, Montse. Why not borrow some club soda and paper towels from Viago and tone it down a bit.

Best to make sure that dressmaker’s dummy you’re using isn’t one of Montse’s victims.

An Indiana Jones hat and double tiaras are great accessories for any discerning film fan, but only if you have Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead with you at all times.

Of course we know who the real fashion Peeps Choi Award Winner is...

He might not have won Vanguard Blog Mascot, but he won our hearts with his adorable boxing gloves.

We hope this helps, and remember to use fashion responsibly because fashion is danger. We've seen a lot of decapitations this year, and we don't want to see any more.

(Hell yeah, there's a mix of Vanguard and Midnight Madness films in this because we're Vanguarders and we do what we want. Also, we love the Midnighteers and Maniacs over at the Midnight Madness blog. Films included: Spring; The Voices; Luna; The Editor; What We Do In The Shadows; The Duke of Burgundy; Goodnight, Mommy; Cub; They Have Escaped; Tusk; It Follows; and Shrew's Nest. Special thanks to the Tusk fans and Peter Kuplowsky for being good sports).

SPRING Final Screening!

Spring provokes so many questions. Can supernaturally tinged love work? What's up with that dead bird? And why does the supernatural involve so much blood in bathrooms? Today is your last chance to get your questions answered.

What is up with that bird?

SPRING Final Screening: Sat., Sept 13th, 3:15 PM, SCOTIABANK 3

SPRING: Twitter Buzz!

How could you not want to see the movie made by two of the three contenders for Official Vanguard Blog Mascot? Have you been seeing all the great things people are saying about Spring on Twitter? Too busy standing in ticket holder lines eating burritos? Wipe that hot sauce off the corner of your mouth (nope, the other corner) and check it out.

SPRING Final Screening: Sat., Sept 13th, 3:15 PM, SCOTIABANK 3

Vanguard Blog Mascot Contender #3: The Mole Cricket!

Pew! Pew! Fireworks! Confetti!

Just when it seemed like it was all settled. Just when the helicopters had been deployed to retrieve Spring's Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead and relocate them to the mysterious island on which they will battle for Vanguard Mascot Supremacy, everything's changed.

There's a new contender in town and he brings the regards of The Duke Of Burgundy...

Name: Mole Cricket

Also known as: Gryllotalpa gryllotalpa; "Aaaaah!"; and "What the hell is that?!"

Description: Brownish with a lighter underside; heavily plated head, forelimbs and prothoroax; mole-like digging claws.

 Strengths: Digging; Singing; Flight; Biting.

Weaknesses: Not a strong jumper; Winter; Curry.

Signature moves: Digging; Long Whirring Call; Stealth Attacks; Mole Cricket Fist

Finishing moves: Creeping people out; "Mole Cricket Exits The Cave" Stance.

Why the Mole Cricket would make a good replacement Vanguard Blog mascot for Joe Swanberg:

The Mole Cricket looks cute in boxing gloves. He is the contender most likely to be able to defeat the Midnight Madness Isopod mascot, if it came to a thrown down. The ability to enrage golfers alone is enough reason for the Mole Cricket to become the Official Mascot. Mole Crickets are also bound to become an indie film sensation just like Joe Swanberg.

Vanguard Blog Mascot Contender #2 Profile: SPRING's Aaron Moorhead

Our quest to spice things up and possibly alienate/terrify filmmakers continues! The battle for glory, honor, and the name of Official Vanguard Blog Mascot also continues! We've told you about Contender #1, Justin "That Resolution guy" Benson; now we present Contender #2!

Name: Aaron Scott Moorhead

Also known as: "That other Resolution guy"

Description: Reddish blond area with points, facial hair

Strengths: Cat-lifting, Ciaran Foy movies, catacomb exploration

Weaknesses: Vampires, winged horses

Signature move: Screaming in stairwells

Finishing move: Putting on and taking off sunglasses

Why Aaron Moorhead would make a good replacement Vanguard Blog mascot for Joe Swanberg: Aaron has the power to bypass the confines of time and space when toasting with a wineglass. Plus he went hunting with the King of England that one time.

Who will win? Stay tuned, faithful readers!

Vanguard Blog Mascot Contender #1: SPRING's Justin Benson

Okay gang, it's that time of year for us to announce our Vanguard Mascot! *blaring trumpets* *tossed confetti* And the blog readers rejoiced!

If you remember last year, we just decided to declare Director/Actor/Beer Brewer/All Around Great Guy Joe Swanberg as our "Unofficial" Mascot because this is the Vanguard Blog and we can do what we want. Swanberg was an obvious choice because he appeared in NOT ONE BUT TWO Vanguard films in 2013 (Proxy; The Sacrament). This year we've decided to make it official because, remember, we do what we want.

Unfortunately, our inaugural champ only appears in our collective hearts at the 2014 Festival, sigh. And with no films it means that-gasp-the title of Official Vanguard Mascot 2014 must fall to another. Sorry, Joe Swanberg. Um, maybe if you were part of a TIFF 2014 movie, this wouldn't be happening to you right now. Yeah. Exactly. (PS - we still love you and technically owe you an ice cream cone, eep.)

But wait! Instead of just declaring a new winner, we've decided to spice things up this year because why declare a winner when... YOU CAN HAVE A BATTLE. FOR GLORY! FOR HONOUR! Oh heck yes. So without further ado, we present to you the first contender for the title of Official Vanguard Mascot 2014.

Name: Justin Benson

Also known as: "That Resolution guy"

Description: Brownish area with points, tattoos

Strengths: Telepathy, conserving towels, wearing black turtlenecks

Weaknesses: Frozen lakes, recognizing English accents

Signature moves: Turning into a ghost

Finishing moves: Speaking Spanish

Why Justin Benson would make a good replacement Vanguard Blog mascot for Joe Swanberg:
Besides being able to high five while jogging along the Seine, Justin can also communicate with mermaids which would come in handy when watching genre movies.

Stay tuned for the second contender. We'll be dropping all contenders on an island and having them fight to the death. If you want to send something to a tribute, wait, wrong movie. LET THE BATTLE BEGIN!

SPRING: Does Supernatural Love Work?

Ah, young and/or ancient love...
In the Vanguard program guide, Spring is described as "Before Sunrise with a supernatural twist in this tale of an American backpacker in Italy who falls in love with a beautiful young woman harbouring a dark, primordial secret."

And that love does certainly look nice in the picturesque still above. But I have said before that relationships with dead girls just don't work and so I'm a little concerned. Maybe she's not dead. Maybe she's not a vampire. After all ancient tomes and grimoires on vampirism don't mention anything about molting.

[The Vanguard Blog does have an extension collection of Dark and Infernal Books, Tomes, Grimoires and Codices dedicated to many subjects including vampirism, Ryan Reynolds and mole crickets ~The Editor]

Molting can be hard on a relationship

These vampires need napkins, but they're definitely not molting.

Though vampire David Bowie does seem to molt a bit in The Hunger and that didn't work out for him at all. He ended up in a box stored in Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon's attic.

Does not work out at all.

It's quite possible that the woman in Spring is some sort of natural spirit and there is something like a huldra situation going on. That did not go well in Thale, but as Christopher Walken says, you'd always know how someone with a tail felt.

She's feeling "disturbed while creepily reading about human anatomy."
Maybe the woman in Spring is some kind of veiny ghost who molts a little now and then. I mean I've seen the most beautiful ghost ladies have some issues.

This ghost lady is having several issues.

Or she could be a disturbing post-modern Galatea, a woman made as a gift for another, like the Bride. That one ends in a murder-suicide.

She's alive, alive--and dead two minutes later.

But it's possible that I'm too pessimistic about supernatural love. I mean, it worked out in The Ghost And Mrs. Muir. The widowed Mrs. Muir has a lovely life with her ghostly beloved whom only she can see.

It's not creeping if he's a ghost and not a vampire. Also, if he's Rex Harrison.

And Macarena Gómez' character in Dagon got her happily ever after despite her "dark, primordial secret." Sure, there were some rough patches on her road to happiness, but what relationship doesn't have those?

A rough patch.

See if it works out for those crazy kids (and that dead bird) when Spring premieres tonight!
