DER NACHTMAHR Premieres Tonight!

I like movies. Do you like movies? I like movies.

Put on your raddest rave outfit, "borrow" your parents' car and don't forget your homunculus, symbiote or parasitic twin, because they are going to want to see Der Nachtmahr's premiere tonight, too!

I'm not an homunculus, but can I come?

What is Der Nachtmahr, besides a German word for "Nightmare?" Well, we're glad you asked. Allow Vanguard programmer Colin Geddes to explain:

Secret raves, drugs, and late nights are par for the course for sixteen-year-old Tina (Carolyn Genzkow) and her friends on the decadent Berlin party scene. When Tina passes out at a party one night, she assumes it was just a side effect of her wild lifestyle — that is, until a mysterious creature begins haunting both her dreams and her waking hours. Tina struggles to make those around her see the thing, but to no avail, and as she becomes ever more unsettled and manic, her parents are forced to get her psychiatric help. But as the little beastie seems to lurk around every corner, she is forced to overcome her fears and forge a bond with the monster.

Did you say "forging a bond with a monster?" I'm coming, too!

And before you go, make sure to see the amazing creature sketches AKIZ sent us and read Vanguarder Leslie's interview with him.

NO MEN BEYOND THIS POINT Premieres Tonight!

Hurry up and finish drying your delicates because No Men Beyond This Point premieres tonight!

No Men Beyond This Point imagines a future in which not only do women reproduce without men, but women have totally lost interest in sexytimes....or have they?

Let us chant our holy mantra, "Wimmennzzzz"

It's tells the story of one brave man who dares to love and the woman who dares to love him back. (It's also a mockumentary, so, you know, I'm making it sound more serious. For fun).

See the poster and trailer here, and then hurry on over to the Scotiabank Theatre!

Don't worry, everyone's allowed in the screening!

NO MEN BEYOND THIS POINT Screening Times:
Sep. 16, Wednesday, 9:45 pm SCOTIABANK 3

ZOOM Premieres Tonight!

Check your frame rate, get your word count in and hurry down to Scotiabank because Zoom premieres tonight!

Zoom promises to be an intriguing exploration of both interlocking narrative and form as a comic book artist tells a story of a filmmaker who tells the story of a novelist who tells the story of a comic book creator.

"What?" "Don't worry just go."

Check out the trailer here:

And then zoom on over to the Scotiabank. (Oh, god, I'm not even sure I'm sorry for that one).

Zoom Screening Times:
Tues, Sept 15, 10:15 PM SCOTIABANK
Wed, Sept 16, 9:45 PM SCOTIABANK

LOVE Premieres Tonight!

Grab your 3D glasses and recall your past affairs, because Gaspar Noé is back at TIFF and this time with Love. Well, he always brings love before but this time his Love is 3D. The sex, regret and longing are all 3D, too.

As Vanguard Programmer Jesse Wente writes:

Recalling classics such as Last Tango in Paris and recent works such as Nymph()maniac, Love brings a rare honesty to its portrayal of love and sex. This is Noé's most fearless and provocative film to date.

"Oh, god, he compared me implicitly to Brando. You got this. You can do it."

See all the beauty, awkwardness and regret of love tonight!

LOVE Screening Times:
Tue, Sept 15, 8:45 PM RYERSON
Thurs, Sept 17, 6:00 PM TIFF BELL LIGHTBOX

LACE CRATER Premieres Tonight!

Wanna go see a movie?

Grab your burlap "going out" sacks because Lace Crater premieres tonight. (You're going to want to pick up some protection, too. Love is love, but intimate hauntings and sexually transmitted ghostism are forever).

Lace Crater is the charming and sometimes creepy story of a Ruth (Lindsay Burdge), a young woman going through some relationship troubles, and a shy ghost named Michael. As Vanguard Programmer Colin Geddes puts it:
An awkward twentysomething begins to undergo some strange physical changes after a weekend tryst — with a ghost — in this charmingly lo-fi, supernaturally-tinged comedy-drama.
Will Ruth and Michael make it work despite the chafiness of burlap? Will they remember to use protection and avoid intimate hauntings and sexually transmitted ghostism?

And, if that's not enough drama, Lace Crater also features, special guest, Joe Swanberg, the inaugural Vanguard Program Blog Mascot. Could this be his attempt to reclaim the title?

Hi, is this Vanguard Mascot Battle? I have a contender.

LACE CRATER Screening Times:
Tuesday, Sept 15th, 9:30 PM SCOTIABANK 10
Tuesday, Sept 17th, 9:30 PM SCOTIABANK 14
Sunday, Sept 20th, 3:15 PM SCOTIABANK 9

EVOLUTION Premieres Tonight!

I like to think that Evolution exists in the same world as Peter Strickland's The Duke of Burgundy. It has the same gorgeous cinematography, a similar focus on the natural world. But where The Duke of Burgundy presented a world of female scholars and scientists, in which the only male voice was that of a mole cricket singing on a recording, in Evolution, there are no adult men. There are only boys. The film takes place on an island populated only by young boys and female care providers performing mysterious experiments on them.

We have a teaser now, and it looks gorgeous.

Perhaps, if we are lucky, there will be a mole cricket here and there.

Meanwhile, on another part of the island, mole crickets and lepidoptery lectures.

EVOLUTION Screening Times:
Mon., Sept. 14, 9:30pm at RYERSON
Wed., Sept. 16, 4:30pm at BLOOR HOT DOCS CINEMA
Sun., Sept. 20,  8:30pm at TIFF BELL LIGHTBOX

MEN & CHICKEN Premieres Tonight!

Fans of Danish director Anders Thomas Jensen and Mads Mikkelsen and chickens rejoice! Men & Chicken premieres tonight!

You've seen Mads Mikkelsen as Hannibal Lecter cooking and eating people on Hannibal, and you might have even seen a poultrygeist version of Jack Nicholson doing strange things in a theme park in The Chickening, but Men & Chicken is a wholly other animal. Possibly a chicken. We can't be sure.

Knowing the unique personas that Mikkelsen has created for Jensen on film, there will be dark, twisted comedy. There will also be at least one giant block of cheese, there will be moustaches, there will be tennis whites, and there will be chickens.

MEN & CHICKEN Screening Times:
Mon. Sept 14, 9:00 PM SCOTIABANK 1
Wed. Sept 16, 10:00 PM BLOOR HOT DOCS CINEMA
Sun. Sept 20, 3:30 PM SCOTIABANK 1

COLLECTIVE INVENTION Premieres Tonight!

Hurry up, guys, Collective Invention plays tonight!

Kwon Oh-Kwang's Collective Invention premieres tonight!

Is it mere coincidence that Evolution, a film about a mysterious island where young boys who swim a lot are subjected to experiments, premieres the very same evening that Collective Invention, a film about a young fish man who became a fish man after he participated in a series of clinical trials? We're not saying it isn't coincidence. We are just strongly implying something. We at Vanguard are trying to warn you without giving away our hand.

The truth is out there, Ju-jin.

We'll just note that Evolution was influenced by Chirico. And Collective Invention happens to be a reference to a work by Magritte.  And how does The Devil's Candy, a Midnight Madness film seemingly about an evil painting, fit in to all this? (And don't say, "It doesn't!")

Filled with secrets she can never share. Because, The Man.

We know you are curious about the life of a fish-person. We all are. Learn a little more about the life of a fish-person (and the terrible effects of our voracious curiosity in this digital) with Collective Invention tonight!

Grab your bat and gas up your car, because Ryoo Seung-wan's latest film Veteran premieres at Vanguard tonight!

Will there be exciting action scenes? Yes! Will there be humor? Very likely! Will a tired police captain ask for maverick Detecive Do-cheol's badge? I would not be surprised!  Will a smug jerk get his rightful comeuppance? I have every reason to believe so!

Detective Do-cheol is coming for you, probable-jerk-who-is-very-dapper!

FEBRUARY Premieres Tonight!

Finish your homework, dig out your water- and blood-resistant boots, and sharpen up your knives because February premieres tonight! Oh, and make sure to note the updated screening time for tonight's premiere.

We only have a few stills, the poster and the TIFF.net description to go by:
Kat (Kiernan Shipka, Mad Men) and Rose (Lucy Boynton) are in different grades at a prestigious prep school for girls, where they are stranded after their parents mysteriously fail to retrieve them for winter break. Meanwhile, a haunted young woman, Joan (Emma Roberts), makes a bloody pilgrimage across a frozen landscape toward the school. As Joan gets closer, Kat is plagued by increasingly terrifying visions, and Rose can only look on in horror as her younger schoolmate becomes possessed by an unseen evil force.
Are they at a mysterious boarding school for ballet dancers and witches?

Dancers AND Witches.

Is the mysterious force be the secret store early-Aughts "irradiated meat" emanating from the lunch room? Is this some kind of supernatural frenemies situation?

We'll find out tonight!

MY GREAT NIGHT Premieres Tonight!

"Did you hear, My Great Night plays tonight?" "Dammit, I won't have time to volumize my hair!"
Get your sequined tux or gown out, volumize your hair and memorize all your cues 'cause My Great Night premieres tonight!

This is Álex de la Iglesia's first film in the Vanguard program but his wild horror has been a staple over at Midnight Madness. And while there are no witches or accion mutantes, he's bringing his visual flair to his satire of a big television studio's New Year's Eve special that's headed towards fiasco.

Iglesia is also bringing Spanish singing superstar, Raphael. And, why yes, the film does seem to have the same title as Raphael's hit song, "Mi Gran Noche." Get in the mood with Raphael's 1967 television performance of the song:

See the poster and trailer here.
